Juneteenth for Mazie is a simply gorgeous book. The muted pallet of the cover illustration carries on throughout the book and creates a sense of connection between past and present while lending gravity to the subject matter. But the story is neither muted nor grave. It’s a sweet and relatable tale about a young girl, Mazie, who’s in a bad mood because she can’t do whatever she wants, which at the moment is to play outside at bedtime. Her dad asks, “Why so grumpy, Sugar Bear?” And he proceeds to cheer her up by telling her about the Juneteenth celebration they will have the next day and explaining the importance of that celebration. He tells her about her great-great-great-grandpa Mose, who was an enslaved person. He gently reminds Mazie that she might be tired of hearing “no” all the time, but Grandpa Mose heard “no” even more. He explains how Grandpa Mose worked in the fields while dreaming of freedom, listened the day the Emancipation Proclamation was read from the balcony of a hotel in Texas, and celebrated with other newly freed people into the night. Mazie’s dad doesn’t skip over the difficult struggle for civil rights which followed that momentous day in 1865. He tells Mazie about how Black people struggled, achieved, and became heroes throughout the years, all while remembering Juneteenth. Then Mazie’s dad tells her, “it’s your turn to celebrate … and to remember.” Thus, Floyd Cooper infuses the celebratory tone of this book with a sense of reverence, gratitude, and solemn responsibility. This book is a must read for every family seeking to raise anti-racist children who understand our country’s history and are committed to social justice and equality.
