Back Jacket Description for Camila the Record-Breaking Star: After reading about kid record-breakers, Camila dreams of breaking a record of her own. But which world record should she tackle? No matter what she tries, Camila finds that breaking records is hard. Will she ever become a record-breaking star?

Camila the Record-Breaking Star is a short Chapter Book (length: three chapters and 26 pages each) in a four-book series. These books hit a sweet spot for emerging readers who are transitioning from Easy Readers to longer Chapter Books. My 8 year old second-grader was able to read the text independently, with just a little help. What I loved the most about these books was that they supported my daughter in learning to read (and understand) new Spanish words, too, something we have been working on at home. Each book has simple Spanish words sprinkled throughout that can be understood in context.

This book features a Latinx family with close family relationships, and the main character, Camila, is spunky and full of initiative. The story engaged both of my children (ages 4 and 8). In fact, they liked it so much that after we read these two books, they begged me to buy them the other two books in the series!

At end of the story there is an activity (a game called “Who will hold the record?”). There’s also a glossary of Spanish words at the beginning and a glossary of some of the more difficult English words in the story at the end. It includes some reading comprehension questions for discussion at the end, too. As such, these books would make a great homeschooling companion, or just serve as a great way to support your child’s in-school learning at home.

*I was gifted a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review in connection with Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021.
